Trail Overview

The Piswa Trail is the longest and most scenic trekking route on the Uganda side of Mount Elgon. This trail is less crowded than other routes and offers excellent opportunities for wildlife sightings and wide mountain views.

Trekkers hike through open grasslands, forest zones, and alpine moorlands while enjoying panoramic landscapes across eastern Uganda and the surrounding valleys before reaching the summit of Wagagai Peak (4,321m).

6 Day Piswa Trail Itinerary

Day 1: Kapkwata β†’ Piswa Camp

Start trekking from **Kapkwata trailhead** through open grasslands and forest areas before reaching **Piswa Camp** for overnight.

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Day 2: Piswa Camp β†’ Hunter’s Cave Camp

Continue climbing through beautiful moorland landscapes with expansive mountain views before arriving at **Hunter’s Cave Camp**.

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Day 3: Hunter’s Cave β†’ Mude Camp

Trek across alpine vegetation and volcanic terrain before reaching **Mude Camp**, located near the summit area.

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Day 4: Mude Camp β†’ Wagagai Peak β†’ Mude Camp

Early morning hike to **Wagagai Peak (4,321m)**, the highest point of Mount Elgon. After enjoying summit views, descend back to **Mude Camp**.

Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Day 5: Mude Camp β†’ Sasa River Camp

Descend through alpine and bamboo vegetation zones following the **Sasa Trail** to reach **Sasa River Camp**.

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Day 6: Sasa River Camp β†’ Budadiri

Final descent through forest and farmland back to **Budadiri trailhead**, marking the end of the trek.
